I think for a lot of us, our definition of “best friend” is found in what a friend does rather than what he actually is. In other words, it’s a lot easier to describe “best friend” than it is to actually define it.

I don't know who to tell
One of my friend’s parents was recently hospitalized. He/She’s has been in a coma for a few weeks, with massive brain hemorrhaging that’s affected his/her internal organ function. The organs are failing and the family has decided to pull off life support tomorrow.
My friend’s parent is going to pass on tomorrow.
And I don’t really know what to do or think.
